I want to protect myself when hiring employees. Should I require each prospective employee to fill out an employment application?

An employment application can help you in multiple ways. First, it will solicit lots of information to help you make the decision as to whether the candidate is right for your business. The employment application can also be helpful later if you decide to fire the employee after discovering a lie on the form.

A good employment application will solicit information about past work experience, special skills, educational information, and also gives consent to the company to check references. But be careful, as there are a number of questions that are illegal to ask in an employment application.
